1. Mrs. Jones has had a progressive decline in her mental capabilities in the past 5 to 6 years. At first her family attributed her occasional memory lapses, confusion and agitation to grief over her husband’s death 6 years earlier. When examined, Mrs.Jones was aware of her mental decline and showed an IQ of 30 points lower than would be predicted by her work history, A CT scan showed diffuse cerebral atrophy. What is Mrs. Jone’s problem?

2. Research indicates that stem cells may resolve spinal trauma by regrowing attachments between severed nerves. However, many religions believe that stem cell research is morally wrong. Is stem cell research morally, ethically permissible if it can resolve spinal trauma, Parkinson’s disease, and other disease processes?

3. Many people watched the care and rehabilitation Christopher Reeve received. However, most quadriplegics and paraplegics can’t afford this level of medical care and are often placed in nursing homes where they receive minimal care. Doesn’t everyone deserve the same level of care? Is it feasible to expect the public health care system to support this level of care.

4. We talk a lot about confidentiality in health care. Regulations such as HIPAA legislate confidentiality for medical records. Yer, if a child is admitted to the hospital with subdural hematoma and child abuse is suspected, we are mandated to report it. Isn’t this a branch of confidentiality? Why is this breach okay? Discuss other situations in which it okay to breach confidentiality.

5. If you had a child in the first grade and you found out that a child with severe cerebral palsy was going to join the class, how would you feel? Does the presence of CP indicate ot predict the level of intelligence?
