When your food leaves your mouth it goes down the esophagus. The food is pushed down into the stomach and peristalsis keeps the food from coming back up.The esophagus connects the mouth and the stomach, so when the food goes down it gets pushed into the stomach, where the food is broken into small pieces. When peristalsis is not helping the esophagus push the food down into the stomach the food comes back up as throw-up.
